THE BOSTON DESIGN CENTER "DREAM HOME 2008": May 1st - July 1st, 9am-5pm, Boston Waterfront

The Boston Design Center is hosting Dream Home 2008, an unprecedented design installation event showcasing the extraordinary talents of 9 design firms. Dream Home 2008 will launch with a gala benefit for The Esplanade Association on Thursday, May 1 and opens to the public on Friday, May 2nd.

BOSTON MODEL SAILING: Sunday, May 18th, 3:30-5:30pm, Storrow Lagoon

Join in the fun and try your hand at model boat sailing. Our club captains will teach newcomers how to work the remote control and maneuver the boats - which are available to the public free of charge. Model boat enthusiasts are encouraged to bring out their own vessels to race the lagoon course.

RADIO 92.9 EARTH FEST- Featuring Cake, The BoDeans, English Beat, Lemonheads, Cracker: Saturday, May 25th, 12pm-6:30pm, Hatch Shell

The 15th Annual 92.9 EarthFest is a celebration for the Earth featuring great music, family-friendly activities and showcase a host of environmentally friendly products and non-profit organizations. Produced in conjunction with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, the event draws more than 100,000 along the banks of the Charles at The DCR Hatch Shell.

 

The Esplanade Association's Spring Esplanade Park Walks and Talks:

Explore the Wild Side of the Esplanade! - Presented by Mass Audubon's Boston Nature Center Teacher/Naturalists; Wednesday, May 28th, 6pm, Esplanade

Did you ever wonder what lives at the Esplanade? This all-ages/family program will give you a chance to look closely at the trees, bugs, and water in this fascinating park. We'll use nets to collect and study the critters that live in the river. Games and creative activities will make this a fun experience for anyone interested in urban nature! Wear clothing that can get dirty.

*Meet at brick building near Dartmouth St. footbridge (cross the footbridge over Storrow Drive, walk down the ramp, and the brick building will be straight ahead).

AIDS WALK BOSTON : Sunday, June 1st, 11am, Esplanade

Join over 15,000 friends, families, colleagues and schoolmates to walk New England's largest AIDS related event- AIDS Walk Boston. The Walk is a family-friendly event that incorporates both education and entertainment into the day’s festivities. It is a powerful experience to be a part of, sure to filled with special stories and cherished memories.

 

The Esplanade Association's Spring Esplanade Park Walks and Talks:

The Esplanade, Boston's Lido- Presented by Charles A. Hammond, Landscape Historian, Harvard Landscape Institute, Sunday, June 1st, 3pm, Community Boating

Venice's Lido is a world famous shoreline, highly populated with Venetians themselves. It combines sculpture, garden architecture, and handsome plantings of trees with user friendly walkways or paths. We invite you to experience the Esplanade with its rare combination of water, trees, unusual architecture, and statuary while learning about its intentional landscape design, monuments, statues, and structures that give it is unique Boston character.

*Meet in front of the Community Boating Inc. building next to the Charles St. footbridge (cross footbridge over Storrow Drive, walk down stairs and the building will be straight ahead).

CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL WALK: Sunday, June 8th, 10am, Hatch Shell


Over the past 5 years, the Children's Hospital Walk has raised more than $3.4 million for children whose families can’t afford health insurance, who need specialized care, who hope hospital researchers find their cure. It's also a fun day for the whole family and a great way to connect with Children’s friends.

Our club captains will teach newcomers how to work the remote control and maneuver the boats - which are available to the public free of charge. CHARLES RIVER SWIM: Sunday, June 15th, 8am

After decades of pollution, the Charles River has benefited from the ongoing Clean Charles River Initiative, and the river is now clean enough on most summer days to meet swimming standards. The Charles River Swimming club aims to raise awareness of and celebrate the efforts that went into cleaning the river, as well as to highlight the need for continued clean-up to enable recreational swimming in the future.

Water Quality on the Charles River- Presented by Julie Wood, watershed scientist, Charles River Watershed Association, Saturday, June 21st, 10am, Arthur Fiedler statue

Do you wonder about the water quality of the Charles River, including what types of water quality issues have plagued the basin in the past, what the major water quality issues are facing the basin today, and if you can swim and fish safely in the Charles? If so, get those questions answered by an expert during a casual stroll along the Esplanade. You will also learn about the history of the Lower Charles River Basin, including how it has been altered over the years, and how cities can co-exist with clean rivers.

*Meet us at the Arthur Fiedler head statue near the Hatch Shell (cross the Fiedler footbridge over Storrow Drive, walk down the ramp and over the lagoon footbridge, to the island and the Fiedler head statue will be straight ahead.

July LIBERTY MUTUAL PRESENTS BOSTON POPS CONCERT: Thursday, July 3rd, 8PM, Hatch Shell
 

LIBERTY MUTUAL PRESENTS BOSTON POPS FIREWORKS SPECTACULAR: Friday, July 4th, 8PM, Hatch Shell.

No one does fireworks quite like Boston; this year's will be the largest and most complex Boston Fourth of July pyrotechnic display to date. More than 20 thousand pounds of explosives will be used for the display, which will include the largest shells yet to be used - ten-inch diameter shells that will climb to 1500 feet - nearly one and a half times the height of the Hancock Tower. This year's fireworks have an international flair as well - devices are being imported from Portugal, Spain, China, Japan, and Italy.

The Boston Landmarks Orchestra was founded in 2001 to perform free concerts celebrating historical, geographical and architectural settings. By presenting exceptional music performances in significant settings, the Orchestra hopes to foster a broad appreciation of classical music while bringing together the diverse communities of the area.

MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER WALK: Sunday, October 5th, 8am-2pm

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the American Cancer Society’s premier event to raise awareness and dollars to fight breast cancer. This is an opportunity to join your community to celebrate breast cancer survivors, educate women about early detection and prevention, and raise money to fund lifesaving research and support programs.

AMERICAN DIABETES WALK: Saturday, October 11th, 10am

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) walks are family-friendly and feature plenty of entertainment, food, and fun.  Each year, over 500,000 people "walk for a cure" at 200 JDRF Walk locations nationwide. Funds are raised through Corporate Partnership Opportunities, Kids Walk program, the sale of JDRF paper sneakers in retail outlets, and by individual and team walkers obtaining donations from family, friends, co-workers and neighbors.

HEAD OF THE CHARLES REGATTA: October 17-19, Charles River

Since 1965, rowers have come from far and near to the banks of the Charles River to take part in the world's largest regatta. But the fun isn't limited to competitors - there's many ways for spectators to get involved in the weekend's activities. Please visit hocr.org for more information.
