About the Boston Landmarks Petition for the Charles River Esplanade

Isn’t the Esplanade already designated as a Boston Landmark?

(Text is taken from the Boston Landmarks Commission website.)

No. The Esplanade is not already designated as a Boston Landmark. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Charles River Basin District. This listing does not afford the park the same city-level review and protection as Boston Landmark status. Other parks in Boston -- the Public Garden, the Common, the Emerald Necklace, Franklin Park, the Back Bay Fens – are already designated landmarks.  The historic Charles River Esplanade deserves that status as well.
