April 24, 2010, marks the 11th Anniversary of the Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup. Over the past 10 years, a collaboration of groups interested in keeping the river and our communities clean and healthy has coordinated the event. For 2010, these organizations include: The Esplanade Association, the Charles River Watershed Association, the Charles River Conservancy, the City of Newton, Senator Tolman’s Office, The Trustees of Reservations, the Emerald Necklace Conservancy, and the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation.
This year, the collaborating organizations anticipate that thousands of Earth Day volunteers will come to the banks of the River in a collective service effort. In the first year of the project, 800 volunteers participated in the event; in 2009, over 3,000 individuals represented more than 100 different neighborhood, school, religious, and corporate groups and removed over 25 tons of litter from the river!
Volunteers are asked to pick up refuse—including shopping carts, plastic bottles, and old tires—from along the banks of the River, and in doing so, are part of a coordinated effort to cleanup the entire Charles River Basin from Boston to Bellingham. Volunteers are provided with gloves, trash bags, and an event t-shirt for participating, and are invited to a complementary cookout upon the completion of the cleanup. The 11th Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup is taking place April 24, from 9AM to 12PM.
