These world-class fields are open
for youth soccer and baseball, adult softball, and T-ball. The perimeter fence is still up to restrict movement across the fields while the sod takes root. As with all DCR athletic field facilities, users must reserve the fields in advance and obtain a permit. For more information about permits, call the DCR at 617-727-4708.
These new fields are the culmination of months of planning and teamwork, and serve as the first step in a larger renewal of the Charlesbank area of the Esplanade, which includes the Lee Pool, wading pool, playground, and other open spaces.

In 2005 a new public-private partnership was formed by The Esplanade Association, Hill House, The Red Sox Foundation, the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), and the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs(EOEA), to refurbish the worn out playing fields at Lederman Park on the Esplanade. Addressing the frequently flooded, compacted, and ailing fields had long been a goal of TEA, and this incredible partnership made it all possible.
Together with our nonprofit partners, Hill House and The Red Sox Foundation, we raised over $2 million to fund the complete revitalizaiton of the fields. Additional funds in the amount of $175,000 were contributed by the EOEA.
The new fields are named in honor of Teddy Ebersol, the youngest son of Dick Ebersol and Susan Saint James who was tragically killed in a plane crash in 2004. Teddy was a passionate Red Sox fan, and the fields are a great gift to Boston's youth and adult sports leagues. They include a drainage system to prevent future flooding problems, an irrigation system to ensure a healthy stand of grass, landscaping, water fountains, new benches, bleachers, backstops, scoreboards, and a state-of-the-art lighting system donated by Musco Lighting.
Teddy Ebersol's Red Sox Fields are located in Lederman Park - named in honor of Dr. Melvin Lederman, a surgeon, humanitarian, war hero, and commander in the U.S. Navy who was killed during a medical evacuation in Vietnam in 1969.
Lederman Park is situated just east of the Longfellow Bridge in the area of the Esplanade known as Charlesbank, near Boston's West End and the Museum of Science. To learn more about the history of Charlesbank and the efforts being made to restore the area click here.
The new Teddy Ebersol's Red Sox Fields include 3 youth baseball/adult softball diamonds, a T-ball field, and 5 youth soccer fields.

The Esplanade Association has made a commitment with our partners to raise money for the continued maintenance of the new fields. A maintenance endowment has been started, thanks to a generous opening gift from the Ebersol family.
If you would like to contribute to this endowment, please contact our office at 617.227.0365.
